Announcing Consumer Health Information Workshops for Florida Librarians

The Florida Consumer Health Information Network (FCHIN) is sponsoring four workshops on consumer health information provided by the National Networks of Libraries of Medicine Southeastern Atlantic Region. Librarians attending all four of the workshops will be eligible for the Medical Library Association’s (MLA) Consumer Health Information Specialization. All four workshops listed below will be hosted by each of the six multi-type library cooperatives from September 2008 through December 2009. To summarize, the four workshops are:

  1. Beyond an Apple a Day: Providing Consumer Health Information at Your Library. This is a 3-hour hands-on class which provides an overview of core consumer health information resources, the reference interview, legal disclaimers examples and privacy issues. This class is available in an online format as well.

  2. Prescription for Success: Consumer Health Information on the Internet. This 3-hour introductory course includes the basics of MedlinePlus.gov, ClinicalTrials.gov and other Internet resources from professional medical associations and advocacy groups including information on drugs and herbal remedies. This class is not available in an online format at this time.

  3. From Snake Oil to Penicillin: Evaluating Consumer Health Information on the Internet. This is a 3-hour hands-on class also available in an online format. Covered are recommended criteria for assessing the quality of health information websites.

  4. PubMed for the Rest of Us: This 3-hour class covers basic searching; easy techniques for developing complex search strategies; PubMed's special features, such as Limits and the Clipboard; the Journals Database; the Single Citation Matcher; and MyNCBI. It also covers methods for obtaining full-text copies of articles.
