I wanted to share a pet story! This is my late cat Camden. He was known far and wide for his poor attitude and tendencies towards violence. I took this photo of him with this amazing face and (long story short), it found it’s way to the internet. He has been published in bad cat calendars and been in several viral memes that have been shared across social media. His most famous appearances were when comedian Ricky Gervais started Tweeting out photos of himself and internet cats – and featured them on talk shows and interviews. So my cat was on Ellen, Conan, and as you can see in the corner of the photo, on CNN. Camden passed away several years ago, but his legacy of crankiness lives on –on the Internet - and it makes me smile when I see his meme circulating (see below).

Meet Nyx and her emotional support puppy Nico. Nyx is a 4-year-old cardigan welsh corgi. In 2022 she lost her 2 older corgi brothers and had a very difficult time adjusting to her new life as an only child. Queue Nico, the pembroke welsh corgi. The 2 of them are the best of friends who are living their best lives and are OBSESSED with swimming. Seriously though, it’s unnatural how much they love to swim. But we can’t deny they get whatever they want because they are perfect.

<![CDATA[Sponsored Post: EBSCO's Information Services' Dynamic Health]]>Mon, 06 May 2024 16:00:00 GMThttp://fhsla.org/blog/sponsored-post-ebscos-information-services-dynamic-healthFHSLA is proud to present a blog post by EBSCO Information Services - Diamond Sponsor of the 2024 FHSLA annual meeting.

Technology Innovation and Patient Safety
Clinicians and hospital leaders are embracing mobile technology at the point of care (POC) at an unprecedented rate. The utilization of health information technology (HIT) is essential for providing safe, high quality, cost-effective, patient-centric care. National healthcare organizations, such as the Agency Healthcare Research and Quality) and the Center for Disease Control both support the use of clinical decision support services (CDSS) to reduce patient harm and improve quality of care. These findings underscore the importance and need for clinical decision support (CDS) tools at the point of care to improve patient safety, enhance clinical outcomes and standardize care in the acute and non-acute settings.
Over the years, technology has evolved where CDS tools can now be supported on various web-based platforms. CDS solutions can seamlessly integrate into daily workflow using workstations on wheels, computer laptops, desktops, electronic health record (EHR) networks, and mobile devices. Charles Pozner, MD, FSSH, physician consultant at EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO), describes an inverse relationship between a POC tool’s usefulness to clinicians and its ease of use. According to Pozner, “POC tool’s value decreases as the work required to access the information increases.”
Therefore, to achieve the best outcome, it is important to provide easy access to CDS tools at the POC that offer the right information, to the right team, in the right amount of time. This also facilitates the best patient experience, and ultimately, what the Quadruple Aim.

EBSCO’s Award-winning CDS Solution

<![CDATA[Reflections on FHSLA Annual Meeting]]>Mon, 29 Apr 2024 17:03:01 GMThttp://fhsla.org/blog/reflections-on-fhsla-annual-meeting
As part of the student scholarship, recipients are asked to a reflection on their experience at the FHSLA annual meeting. Below is the follow-up from Emily Hannum, student scholarship recipient 2024. Thank you, Emily, for sharing your wonderful experience!

By Emily Hannum

The first day continuing
education (CE) course on statistics presented by William Kearns, PhD was a wonderful introduction, or refresher, to many basic (and vital) concepts. The course was well paced for those new to statistics and statistical terminology but also was designed in a way to benefit those of any familiarity or skill level. This CE course left a lingering thought of how these concepts can be and are already applied in areas of librarianship.

The ice breaker session in the later part of the day gave an opportunity to move away from one's comfort zone and meet other members of the FHSLA organization. In doing so, attendees were able to identify commonalities in various areas of health science librarianship, such as a focus on peer-reviewed resources and having limited print materials available for checkout. For example, a health science librarian supporting medical students may be unfamiliar with the work of a hospital librarian; in this breakout session members were able to become better informed on the depth and breadth of health sciences librarianship.

On day two, the sessions What’s New in Your Library and Poster presentations further promoted the interconnectivity within the diverse field of health sciences. The What’s New in Your Library session was a wonderful way to learn about some of the creative ways librarians are engaging with their patrons, while the Poster presentations highlighted some of the larger ongoing projects.

The AI panel discussion tied with the statistics CE for the most valuable portion of the meeting. The three panelists provided insightful and diverse information on a topic which is only gaining salience in librarianship. With the themes ranging from ethical use of AI to available AI tools and their capabilities, much framework was developed for those just beginning to dive into AI in librarianship. The meeting overall provided a wonderful opportunity to network, become informed on trending topics in health sciences librarianship, and expand one’s knowledge on the future of librarianship.

<![CDATA[President's Message & Call for Committees!]]>Thu, 11 Apr 2024 14:13:42 GMThttp://fhsla.org/blog/presidents-message-call-for-committeesWelcome to a new season of FHSLA! I am honored to serve as your president in the coming year and appreciate you putting your faith in me to lead this special organization. My inbox is always open for suggestions on projects, future programming and ways to help Members get involved so please don't hesitate to reach out to me for any reason.

I want to spend the next year celebrating each other, what makes us different and the similarities we all share. A few of my goals for the next year include:
 • Engaging with our current members to enhance FHSLA as an organization and plan programming that meets our member's needs
 • Focus on membership and bringing back past members and new faces
 • Reviewing and updating our bylaws
 • Finding programming that we all can be excited and proud of including a mid-year virtual meeting

After last week's annual meeting I am feeling energized and enthusiastic about what the future may bring to the profession and to FSHLA and I hope you all are excited for this next chapter.

I encourage you to renew your membership if you haven't already. At only $15 for the year, the value of FHSLA goes well beyond the cost of the membership. If you need to renew or have colleagues that would like to join, please visit the FHSLA website: https://fhsla.org/membership.html. Additionally, If you did not attend the meeting, please complete the following membership survey. This will help us continue to plan meetings and activities that are useful to members. If you attended the meeting, you completed this survey live, during the meeting.

On a final note, I will be appointing a new secretary this week to fill the vacated seat. The term will only be 1 year (rather than the normal 2) because the previous secretary left that role to fill another role within FHSLA (we are so thankful for her!). If you are interested in being considered for the position, be sure to let me know by the end of this week. Additionally, if you want to serve FHSLA another way, the following committees need members and would be happy to have volunteers. If you would like information for any of these, please don't hesitate to ask.
Bylaws committee: Adhoc committee to help review and make changes to the organization bylaws. Time commitment: Since this is a new and temporary committee the time commitment is unknown at this time. Estimate: 1-2 hours per month. Members may be asked to join the executive committee monthly meetings for updates on bylaws and to help stay involved in the process.

Committee Chair - Carrie Adams-Driggers. This includes scholarships, librarian of the year award, honorary member award. Time commitment: This committee mostly meets before the annual meeting (Jan-March). Estimate: Less than 1 hour per week during that time.

Strategic planning committee: The charge of the SPC is to identify and develop strategies to facilitate the accomplishment of the goals and objectives of FHSLA. Committee chair: Jorge Perez. Time commitment will vary depending on strategic goals. Estimate: 1-2 hours per month.

Nominating committee: The charge of the Nominating Committee is to solicit at least one candidate for each open elective office. Committee chair: Jorge Perez. This committee mostly meets before the annual meeting (Jan-March) but may be asked to solicit candidates throughout the year. Time commitment is minimal.

Continuing Education: The charge of the CE Committee is to arrange for the CE courses offered at the Annual Meeting. This includes surveying the members either formally or informally; and coordinating arrangements with the instructors, the program committee and the hotel or meeting place. Committee chair: Ardis Hanson. This committee mostly meets before the annual meeting (Jan-March) and may meet additionally throughout the year if additional CE offering are needed.

Thank you,

Angie Novak
FHSLA President
